Fifty-one New Zealand projects shortlisted in 2017 NZIA Architecture Awards

By Justine Testado|

Friday, Aug 4, 2017

Heritage - The Suter Art Gallery – Te Aratoi o Whakatū, Nelson by Warren and Mahoney Architects, Jerram Tocker Barron Architects and Ian Bowman Architect and Conservator.

Every year, architects vie for a chance to win big in the New Zealand Institute of Architects' Architecture Awards, which distinguishes top-notch architectural design around the country. The 2017 competition is already well underway. Most recently, the NZIA revealed 51 shortlisted projects that have made it to the final round.

The jury, chaired by Arrowtown-based architect Louise Wright, was pleased by the abundance of strong submissions this year. “The range and quality of recent architecture projects made it difficult to decide what to leave off the shortlist,” Wright commented. The jury will visit all the shortlisted projects beginning later this month.

The winners won't be announced until November. Additionally, the buildings in the categories of housing, commercial, education, and public architecture will be considered for four signature awards named after four influential New Zealand architects: Sir Ian Athfield, Sir Miles Warren, Ted McCoy and John Scott.
