The winners of the 2021 New Zealand Architecture Awards have been announced

The winners of the 2021 New Zealand Architecture Awards, hosted by the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects, have been announced. Across 13 categories, 26 projects, featuring two social housing projects, transportable tiny homes for at-risk youth, an early childhood care center dedicated to educating students in the Maori language, and a “build to rent” development, among others, have been recognized by a panel of four experienced architects. 

The New Zealand Architecture Awards program aims to showcase projects that are aware of pressing issues and are producing meaningful responses in New Zealand. 

The jury consisted of architects Sharon Jansen, Grant Edwards, John Hardwick-Smith, and Gary Lawson. Together they visited 52 projects across New Zealand before deciding on a final list of the country’s best new architecture. 

“It was a privilege to visit these projects in reality,” said Sharon Jansen. “As jurors, we aim to assess the essence of each project — its siting, its expression and function, its place in the built environment, and how it contributes to the life of its occupants and community.”
