Our Must-Do Picks for Archtober 2017 Week 3 (Oct. 16-23)

New York City's Archtober is now in full swing! From October 1-31, the citywide festival celebrates the significance of architecture and design in everyday life. 

For the seventh year in a row, Archinect & Bustler are proud to present Archtober's jam-packed roster of exhibitions, lectures, conferences, films, and tours across the five boroughs. From their lengthy calendar of events, we'll be picking out exciting weekly highlights. Plan ahead with our recommendations for Archtober Week 3, October 16-23. Bustler also recently chatted with Camila Schaulsohn, the Communications Director for the AIANY and the Center for Architecture, about how Archtober began.

11th Annual Arthur Rosenblatt Memorial Lecture | Farshid Moussavi: Thoughts on a New Architecture | October 16

Farshid Moussavi, Founder of London-based Farshid Moussavi Architecture (FMA) and Professor in Practice of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, will share her thoughts on a new approach to architecture based on her research, experience of working on the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland, and her recently completed residential projects in Paris and Montpellier.

Opening Reception, Geostories: Another Architecture for the Environment | October 17

Geostories is a manifesto, developed by the design-research practice Design Earth, on the environmental imagination presented in architectural projects that engage the planetary scale with a commitment to the drawing as medium. This exhibition will present four subject-specific projects – After Oil, Of Oil and Ice, Pacific Aquarium and Trash Peaks – in the form of large scale drawings printed on canvas and mounted on wood.

National Design Awards | Winner’s Salon | October 17

As part of National Design Week, the 2017 National Design Award winners will lead concurrent salons for discussion of new ideas and advancements in design. Participants will  forge valuable connections with the brightest minds in the design world and network with fellow attendees. 

Workplace Wednesdays: Snøhetta | October 18

Every week, Archtober invites you to an exciting behind-the-scenes look at some of the most innovative architecture firms in NYC. This Workplace Wednesday makes a visit to Snøhetta's New York office!

No. 9 – An Exhibition by Frida Escobedo Opening | October 20

Conceived by Frida Escobedo Taller de Arquitectura, the exhibition explores the history and proposes an alternative interpretation of la Ruta de la Amistad (“Route of Friendship”) in Mexico City—a series of nineteen monumental abstract sculptures by artists from seventeen countries, realized as part of the cultural program of the 1968 Olympics and integrated within the city’s then nascent highway system.

Building of the Day: Museum of Chinese in America (Designer: Maya Lin Studio; Architect: Bialosky + Partners Architects) | October 21

Take a tour of the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA). Designed by artist and designer Maya Lin, and founded in 1980, MOCA is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history, heritage, culture and diverse experiences of people of Chinese descent in the United States.

Building of the Day: Freshkills Park | October 22

North Park will be a 21-acre swath of land connecting visitors to spectacular views of Main Creek and the adjacent William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge via divided walking and high speed paths. Park visitors will stroll along seven acres of native seed plots operated by the Department of Parks & Recreation’s Greenbelt Native Plant Center. Construction is underway, and the project will open to the public in 2020.
