Our LA architecture and design event picks for Summer 2018

Temperatures are heating up in sunny-as-always Los Angeles. Whether you plan to party at outdoor concerts or chill inside a museum, there are plenty of fun architecture and design events happening around town during these warmer months. Bustler rounded up a snappy list of ongoing and upcoming events this summer that we think are worth checking out. Read on for our latest weekly event recommendations.

Poetic Structure: Art + Engineering + Architecture | Open now until September 2

Showcasing the multi-disciplinary practice of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and the intersections between art and engineering, the exhibition will include multiple installations and projects by SOM in collaboration with various artists.

Design for Dignity 3 | July 13

AIA|LA's third annual DESIGN FOR DIGNITY: Housing an Inclusive Community conference will serve as a forum to discuss implementation strategies and best-practices to address our regional housing crisis. Architects, designers, urban planners, civic leaders, and community activists will convene to share insight into the funding sources, planning policies and legislative opportunities that have recently been developed.

3D: Double Vision | Opening on July 15

Opening at LACMA, “3D: Double Vision” is the first American exhibition to survey a full range of artworks, dating from 1838 to the present, that produce the illusion of three dimensions. Ultimately, to experience 3D is to engage with questions about the nature of perception, the allure of illusionism, and our relationship with the technologies that create such images.

Privacies Infrastructure | Opening on July 21

Privacies Infrastructure is a new public program by Materials & Applications that explores the notions of privacy and privatization in the residential landscape of Echo Park. The multifaceted program unfolds over the summer with outdoor installations, performance, and public programming, including four new commissions by Besler & Sons, Tanya Brodsky, Fiona Connor, Gwyneth Shanks, and Sarah Lewis-Cappellari.

David Hockney: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life | Open now until July 29

In 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life, David Hockney offers a vibrant and intimate view of people with whom he has developed relationships over the past 50 years. The majority of the portraits were painted in Hockney’s Los Angeles studio, all from life and over a period of two or three days, which the artist has described as “a 20-hour exposure.”

Featuring a selection of works that Robert Rauschenberg made in and about L.A., this exhibition highlights the city’s indelible impact on his creative output.

Check out paintings, sculpture, photography, installations and more throughout 40,000+ sq.ft. of industrial indoor and outdoor space.
