Snøhetta selected to renovate Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers in France

In another competition win announced this week, Snøhetta was selected to renovate the historic Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers in Nanterre, France. The avant-garde theater was first established in the late 1960s and its current building first opened in 1976. So far, Snøhetta has released only two renderings and not too many project details.

The renovation aims to “accommodate the theatre’s experimental profile” with a flexible space that makes the theater “more visible from the outside and more luminous on the inside,” Snøhetta says. Current facilities will be expanded, including the addition of a third 200-seat theater to the building's current 900 seats. And the existing restaurant and bookshop will be reorganized “to improve the overall experience for both spectators, artists and staff”. Accessibility to the theater will also be improved.

As project lead, Snøhetta will collaborate with SRA Architectes, theater consultant Kanju, Departmental Service of Architecture and Heritage and engineers Khephren, Egis, Elioth, and SLETEC.

Renovation is currently scheduled to start in January 2020, and completion is expected in early 2022.
