How can augmented reality rethink spatiality? How can AR be used to develop new ideas about the way our cities are designed? These are some of the questions in “Serpentine Augmented Architecture”, which the Serpentine Galleries recently co-launched with Google Arts & Culture and architect David Adjaye.

The initiative is seeking speculative proposals and imaginary city spaces that explore the role and utility of AR in public-space design. The international call is open to architects, designers, games developers, artists, and the like, at any stage of their career. Individuals, teams, and studios can submit.

Give it your best shot, as the winning commission will be selected by an esteemed jury that includes: David Adjaye, Architect and Trustee of the Serpentine Galleries; Virgil Abloh, Artist & Designer; Amira Gad, Curator, Exhibitions & Architecture, Serpentine Galleries; Freya Murray, Creative Lead, Google Arts & Culture Lab; Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries; Yana Peel, CEO, Serpentine Galleries; Amit Sood, Director, Google Arts & Culture; Ben Vickers, Chief Technology Officer, Serpentine Galleries; Kay Watson, Digital Curator, Serpentine Galleries; and Greg Williams, Editor-in-Chief, WIRED UK.

The commissioned design will be developed and experienced in augmented reality on-site at the Serpentine Galleries in London — and next to the 2019 Serpentine Pavilion! — this summer. The submission deadline is February 25, 2019 at 10 a.m. GMT. Learn more at augmentedarchitecture.org.
