New architecture and design competitions in Canada, Czech Republic, Norway & United States

By Alexander Walter|

Thursday, Sep 10, 2020

Toronto's Modernist Ontario Place site is the subject of a new call for counterproposals (see below for details). Design by architect Eberhard Zeidler and landscape architect Michael Hough. Photo by Flickr user Sharon VanderKaay.

For our latest weekly curated picks of architecture and design competitions listed on Bustler, we have chosen four newly posted challenges from different regions of the world.

The briefs call for the design of a new train station for the city of Brno, reimagination of Toronto's historic Ontario Place, revamp of Washington D.C.'s Dupont Circle, and a 5-day student design competition hosted in Oslo.

Brno New Main Train Station

The subject of the Competition is the design of the new Brno main train station, including roofing and platform design, interior layout design, location of the main passenger hall, facade of railway buildings, appearance of the railway body, design of bridge structures and related public spaces in the detail level of an urban-transport-architectural study.

Ontario Place: A Call for Counterproposals
Registration Deadline: Monday, Oct 12, 2020
Submission Deadline: Sunday, Jan 3, 2021

This is a call for counterproposals in which the heritage values of Ontario Place are safeguarded and enhanced while taking the public into consideration. No stuffy condos, privatized marinas, big box programs or casinos; rather, we want to engage the myriad of stakeholders on the site such as families, casual cyclists, the houseboat community, environmentalists, yoga enthusiasts, basketball players, fishing groups, performance artists, skateboarders, cinephiles, architects, and others who have contributed to the vibrancy of the site.

Re-Think Dupont Circle
Register/Submit Deadline: Friday, Dec 4, 2020

Dupont Underground has just launched their second International Design Competition: Re-Think Dupont Circle. One of the key public spaces in Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s famous urban plan for the nation's capital, Dupont Circle was not built out until the late 19th century and has not seen a significant redesign since the 1940’s when the automobile was ascendant. We feel it’s well past time to rethink Dupont Circle as a social, human-centered, public space. The competition covers the immediate urban area of Dupont Circle and it takes place at two scales (micro & macro) that must be interwoven through concept and design. Call for submissions and registration is now open through December 4th, 2020.

If you would like to contribute competitions, award programs, or calls for submissions that aren't listed on Bustler yet, send them directly to our team to review. We may include them in next week's roundup.

If you are curious about Bustler's extensive advertising strategies for architecture and design competitions, reach out to us, and our team would be more than happy to help strategize with you.
