FaulknerBrowns Architects’ Britannia Leisure Centre project has been named the overall winner of this year’s New London Awards during a special ceremony held on Tuesday in the city’s historic Guildhall municipal building.

Located in the diverse eastside borough of Hackney, the development of the Centre was shaped through a series of community design consultations and resulted in a combination of gyms, multiple swimming pools, sports facilities, a café, and a children’s nursery meant to combat Hackney’s documented struggles with health inequity in accordance with the city’s overarching plan.

Current RSHP Associate Partner Georgina Robledo Padilla called the 2021 design a "sustainable and inclusive approach and elegant civic presence" that "stands proud as an example of what good masterplanning can deliver to the community."

The AIA New York’s Executive Director Benjamin Prosky added: “As we recover from the pandemic and once again gather to be social and recreate, we have a new appreciation for well-designed public amenities. This is why the Britannia Leisure Centre, stands out. A practical yet elegant project, that deploys public funds to benefit a community with a public facility that adheres to the highest standards of design excellence.”

“Britannia Leisure Centre is not just an excellent amenity for the local community, it is a fine piece of city-making and a public building of great presence — a first class piece of civic architecture,” jury chair and NLA founder Peter Murray OBE added finally.
