The winners have been announced for the 2022 International Design Awards (IDA). Founded in 2007, the annual program seeks to “recognize, celebrate, and promote exceptional design visionaries” in the fields of architecture, interiors, graphics, fashion, and product design.
The 2022 edition of the awards attracted thousands of submissions from almost 80 countries. Jury member Mark Blackwell of Morphis praised the “diverse and extraordinary submissions” across a variety of geographies, typologies, and scales, noting that “the most successful designs appear to be those who apply creative thinking, crafting innovative and sustainable destinations to connect people with emotion, nature, and context.”
The IDA 2022 Architect of the Year was the Zhejiang Architecture Design and Research Institute, recognized for their Shangyu Museum in Zhejiang Province, China. Designed as two superimposed cubes, the 215,000-square-foot museum houses six exhibition halls and almost 20,000 relics ranging from ceramics and stone tools to calligraphy and paintings.
The IDA 2022 Emerging Architect of the Year was Mahsa Mohebbi from Azad University, Iran, recognized for their Crassula project. Inspired by the Crassula cactus, which symbolizes a love for nature, peace, and tranquility, the pyramidal building seeks to combine natural proportions with ancient Iranian architecture.
The IDA 2022 Interior Designer of the Year was Dina Marciano Design, recognized for their Emerald Bay residence in Laguna Beach. A comprehensive renovation of a 1960s residence, the project offers a sleek, modern aesthetic with a restrained color palette complimented by blonde wood tones.
The IDA 2022 Emerging Interior Designer of the Year was Sheng Wei Yang from the New York School of Interior Design, recognized for their MONCLER SoHo project. The interior scheme seeks to represent “a new era in lifestyle and retail” through an exploration of how customers interact with a brand’s history. Features within the project include a showcase gallery, cocktail bar, and warehouse-inspired archive.
Beyond the architecture and interior design categories, other winners from the 2022 IDA series included Jens Laugesen (Fashion Designer of the Year), Sheetol Chawla (Emerging Fashion Designer of the Year), OXOS (Product Designer of the Year), Shuaicheng Dong (Emerging Product Designer of the Year), Total Design (Graphic Designer of the Year), and Joslynn Taylor (Emerging Graphic Designer of the Year).
