Today the Architectural League of New York (ALNY) has named eight winners in its annual Emerging Voices competition.
The initiative began in 1982 as a means to showcase and celebrate the work of young North American architects and designers on an international stage. The awards program has brought to the forefront of the profession names such as Steven Holl and Tatiana Bilbao, who would later go on to shape the industry. Each winner, therefore, represents the future of the industry in various ways.
The jury reviewed the designers' work in two stages and on an invite-only basis, determining who would join the pantheon of 300 past recipients, including Sekou Cooke and Frida Escobedo, among others.

Juror Mario Gooden shares: “The works of this year’s Emerging Voices winners exhibit architecture’s ability to work across the various scales of the built environment in the production of community, sociality, space, and discourse. The works challenge the discipline and the profession of architecture to confront architectural practices, histories, and their entanglements with social, environmental, and technological changes along with the ways these are revealed in the intersection of bodies, space, ecologies, politics, and aesthetics.”
