AIA New York has announced the list of their 2023 honorees as part of the AIA New York Design Awards. The honored individuals and organizations are in addition to the winners of the AIA New York Design Awards which were announced last month.
The latest accolades to be announced are the Medal of Honor, the Champion of Architecture Medal, the Architecture in Media Award, and the New Perspectives Award. The honorees will be officially presented with their medals at the AIA New York Honors and Awards Luncheon taking place on April 20th.
Medal of Honor
Andrew Bernheimer, FAIA
Andrew Bernheimer is to be awarded the Medal of Honor for this contribution to practice, education, literature, and culture. An Associate Professor at the Parsons School of Design, Bernheimer is also the leader of the only private architectural firm in the United States with unionized labor. The architect is also the editor of the book Timber in the City and co-editor of the collection Fairy Tale Architecture, and sits on the Executive Board of the Institute for Public Architecture in New York City.
Champion of Architecture Medal
Richard Yancey, FAIA, LEED AP, and the Building Energy Exchange
Richard Yancey is the Founder and Executive Director of Building Energy Exchange (BE-Ex), a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the transition to healthy, comfortable, and energy-efficient buildings. BE-Ex serves as a trusted resource and expert to the building industry, and as a founding member of the United Nations International Centres of Excellence for High-Performance Buildings, it has become a key player in advancing high-performance buildings in New York City and New York State. BE-Ex achieves its mission through education, exhibitions, and research that can be put into action.
Architecture in Media Award
New York Review of Architecture
Founded in 2019, the New York Review of Architecture provides insightful reviews of architecture in New York and around the world. The publication's approach is unique in that it avoids themed issues and instead focuses on articles that connect academia, practice, and the public. The outlet publishes a bimonthly print magazine with essays, reviews, reported work, and art, and also features a weekly email newsletter called SKYLINE, which includes a mix of reviews, news, reported dispatches, and gossip.
New Perspectives Award
WIP Collaborative
A dual acronym for both ‘Work in Progress’ and ‘Women in Practice,’ WIP Collaborative is a group of independent design professionals who collaborate on research and design projects that engage communities and the public. Based in New York City, WIP was founded on feminist principles in February 2020 and supports those who reject patriarchal conventions, defining new narratives of architectural and design practice through their work. The founding members of WIP Collaborative are Abby Coover, Bryony Roberts, Elsa Ponce, Lindsay Harkema, Ryan Brooke Thomas, Sera Ghadaki, and Sonya Gimon.
