The Australian Institute of Architects has named its winners for the 2023 National Architecture Awards as part of a special event held recently at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.
The Awards’ 42nd overall edition drew a total of 47 winners across ten categories from a 70-entry shortlist and represents the best examples of adaptive reuse, sustainable design, creative approaches to creating high density, and a “connection to Country,” according to the organization. Jury Chair and past Institute President Shannon Battisson said each “contain their own unique set of intricacies,” adding that, “Our hope was to send a message to all Australians about where our industry should be going in terms of sustainability, learning and listening to Country.”
“We saw innovation in many facets: through precision and care in use of materials and construction methods; respect and care in making alterations; projects that were genuine in their desires for environmental and social sustainability outcomes; projects that championed inclusion and collaboration with community, and diverse design teams; and encouragingly, a deep respect for Country in the design process and architectural outcomes. Making good architecture is not easy and often takes a dedicated and passionate team made up of many people. The awarded projects are layered with generosity to their communities, the planet, and the profession,” Battisson added.
She was joined by People Oriented Design (POD) Director Shaneen Fantin and three other jurors for this year’s selection. The full list of 2023 winners can be viewed below.
