Located in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter in the UK, The Compound doesn't look like much at first glance. But, the building comes to life in all its restored glory once you look inside. Locally based practice BPN Architects transformed the former textile factory into a multi-functional art venue and creative workspace, as well as the private residence of the client, who is an artist and modern art collector.
Completed in 2014, The Compound was recently honored in the 2017 RIBA West Midlands Awards. Read on for more about the project.
BPN Architects kept The Compound's original steel framing, and other details like the exposed brickwork and fixtures to retain its industrial atmosphere.
“The architectural elements are more than mere back drop. The spaces are modelled to create physical and visual connections and to showcase the [client's] art pieces,” the RIBA West Midlands jury wrote.
With 8,500 square-feet of floor space, the building comprises a bar and 25-seat cinema in the basement; a large kitchen, several lounging and dining areas, and vehicle parking on the ground floor; living spaces and private areas for sleeping and studying as well as balconies and mezzanines on the first level.
The second floor features an office and naturally lit studio. On the very top of the building in "The Treehouse", there is a bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Extra bedrooms and bathrooms can also be found throughout the building.
The space can also be used as an event space or for photoshoots and filming.
“A strong partnership between the architect and the client is evident in this stimulating project that turns abandoned spaces into a chic environment,” the jury wrote, upon awarding The Compound as Conservation Project of the Year. “The project demonstrates a keen understanding and a lively interpretation of the history of the local area and its industrial heritage. It gets under the skin of ‘making things’ and celebrates craftsmanship and a beauty of honest and purposeful spaces and objects.”
