d3 Housing Tomorrow 2016 winners explore the future of urban residential design

By Justine Testado|

Thursday, Jun 2, 2016

1st place: ‘Living in the Edge’ by Kim Min Kyu, Lee Chang Han, Kim Myeong Seop, Kim Dong Yeop, Ju Ji Hun, Kim Na Kyoung | KOREA

New York-based organization d3 held another successful edition of their notable Housing Tomorrow Competition! The competition invites architects, designers, engineers, and students worldwide to send their most inventive ideas that can take conventional approaches to urban planning and residential design one step further — a persisting issue that many of the world's cities continue to face.

Participants had freedom in developing the context of their concepts and could explore fantastical ideas, but they were also encouraged to consider essential housing design aspects that could perhaps lead to discovering real-world solutions, including: macro-to-micro scales, sustainability, interconnectivity, and examining the specific interior needs of the unit/individual/family to uphold identity, ownership, and intimacy.

By the end of the 2016 competition, d3 announced three prize winners and 11 special mentions. Winning designers were based in China, Cyprus, Greece, Korea, Thailand, and the U.S.

Take a look at this year's winning entries below.
