AIA Los Angeles prompts inclusive visual identity discussion for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics

By Hope Daley|

Wednesday, Aug 22, 2018

Next Wednesday, August 29th, Bestor Architecture will host LA Plays Itself: Visualizing Urban Design for the 2028 Olympics & Paralympics in their Los Angeles studio. Organized by the AIA Los Angeles chapter, the event will focus on developing a coherent and inclusive visual identity for the city. The 2028 Olympics and Paralympics will present Los Angeles to the entire world—the question now is how to best present the city and all of its diversity.

Topics for discussion will center around identifying and connecting with organizations for collaboration across disciplines, including local social justice and community based groups. Key points also involve increasing opportunity for smaller firms to serve as prime contractors, as well as expanding efforts to last well beyond the 2028 year of hosting the event. The meeting aims to establish goals and metrics to achieve a lower carbon footprint and zero-net energy, and to expand all discussion when referring to the Olympics to the Paralympics and adaptive sports.

The list of speakers include:

  • Barbara Bestor, FAIA – Founding Principal, Bestor Architecture
  • Danielle Brazell – General Manager, City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs
  • Geoff McFetridge – Artist, Champion Don’t Stop
  • Carolina Miranda – Staff Writer, Los Angeles Times
  • Alissa Walker – Urbanism Editor, Curbed

Wow.  That graphic by Sussman Prezja from the '84 games brings back a flood of memories.  The graphic program was well done, very flexible, and showed up everywhere, all over the county.  It really set a sense of place and special event and, amazingly, excitement.  Good times.
