Bustler's editor picks for architecture & design events: London, June 14-21

It’s a BIG week for London!...Bjarke Ingels’ Serpentine Pavilion has opened in Hyde Park along with the new additions to the programme, a series of “Summer Houses” designedby Kunlé Adeyemi of NLÉ, Barkow Leibinger, Yona Friedman and Asif Khan.

Also opening its doors to the public is the brand new Tate Modern extension. In the end it cost £260 million and took 9 years to complete, suffice to say it’s impressive ten floors are sure to be flooded with eager members of the public.

OPEN 2016 - The University of Westminster | June 16-28, recommended by Abigail Banfield

As part of the London Festival of Architecture comes OPEN2016. The show, which has its opening night this Wednesday (16 June, 6–9pm), will display “student work from Westminster’s undergraduate Architecture and Interiors courses, and the Master of Architecture (MArch) RIBA Part 2 course. The show gives an insight to the rich diversity of our studio system, students’ dissertations, and a glimpse of what Westminster's new Fabrication Laboratory offers.”

Head along to see what has been generated over the past year by these incredible student studios. Opening night 16 June, 6–9pm. The exhibition is then open daily 9am, 17 June – 9pm, 28 June.

The New Tate Modern Opening Weekend | June 17-19, recommended by Ellen Hancock

We have been watching the new Tate Modern building brewing from behind the existing galley for what feels like quite some time now (9 years to be exact). Finally it is ready and will be open to the public this weekend for a three-day celebration.

A memorable addition to the London skyline, the new building is designed by Herzog de Meuron who are well known for designing the original building. Aiming to present an ‘increasingly international view of modern and contemporary art’ the extensive new collection promises exciting things. Additionally there is a spectacular new roof terrace with 360-degree views over the city.

The weekend’s events include a ‘late-night’ on Friday curated by young people from Tate Collective London with installations and interactive activities as well as a choral work with over 500 singers, and Film and video works from the Tate’s collection. It will be unavoidable busy so be prepared for large crowds.

Open Garden Estates 2016 | June 18-19, recommended by Abigail Banfield

Open Garden Estates is a wonderful opportunity to see London council estates which are currently under threat of demolition. As with previous years, the residents will be opening up their communal spaces and private gardens for the general public to enjoy and appreciate. The initiative by ASH (Architects for Social Housing) aims to allow the inhabitants and the public alike to campaign to save these estates. Visit the estates on the 18th and 19th June. Yayoi Kusama: sculptures, paintings & mirror rooms | Open now until July 30, recommended by Abigail Banfield

The exhibition gives the public to experience some of Yayoi Kusama’s most loved ‘rooms’. These white boxes are entirely mirrored on the inside, but entirely clinical and white from the outside. Attendees wait to enter into these surreal experiences, and once shut inside these boxes, the kaleidoscope world created by Kusama comes to life. The contrast of these opulent boxes to the unassuming Victoria Miro exhibition space with its bare, utilitarian style adds to the whole experience, creating suspense as you wait to enter into the mysterious artworks.

From working with Adele to free exhibitions such as this; Kusama is recognised and loved globally for her fantastical work with mirrors. The opportunity to encounter these works is definitely not to be missed! Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition is open now, with free entry, and runs until 30th July.

Serpentine Pavilion and Summer Houses 2016 | Open now until October 9, recommended by Ellen Hancock

If you haven’t heard about this, where have you been? Hailed as "Possibly the Serpentine's most impressive pavilion yet" by The Guardian’s Olly Wainwright, everyone’s talking about it. One of the biggest architecture events of the year you simply can’t miss out and this year there are an additional four “Summer Houses” to explore. To Hyde Park for a big adventure!
