The first edition of the EeStairs Staircase Design competition was met with competitive entries from around the globe. Staircase design company Eestairs established the competition to encourage students to bring the best of their creativity into practical design.
Met with stiff competition, the jury's consideration, and a public vote, two winners were selected:
- Custom Design category: "Urban Stairs" by Iurii Tiguntsev (Russia)
- Standard Design category: "Kuspokuse" staircase by Petra Musilová (Czech Republic)
Each winner has been invited to a tour of the EeStairs headquarters in Barneveld, The Netherlands. They will each receive their awards and a cash prize of approximately USD$3,300 (£2000) each.
"'The winning designs are perfect examples of what we would expect from a both a custom and standard design. Tigunstev’s Urban Stairs is not only bespoke it meets the need of its environment; the spiral staircase flanked by gently rising walk way makes is perfect for a public environment as it meets the needs of anyone who might be using it,' says Cornelis van Vlastuin, creative director of Eestairs.
'We hope that the competition and tour of EeStairs offices and manufacturing facility in Barneveld will be invaluable experience for the two winners, helping them to understand the meticulous processes that go into brining designs to life,' explains Vlastuin."
Custom Design winner: "Urban Stairs" by Iurii Tiguntsev (Russia)
"Tigunstev, a student studying architecture, was the designer of Urban Stairs, a project which combined a staircase and an extremely practical sloping walk way that can be used when steps are not appropriate. This modern design is as elegant as it is well thought out. A combination of concrete, metal and glass are brought together in the creation of a staircase that is light, ergonomic and challenges the preconception that minimal design cannot be beautiful and luxurious."
Standard Design winner: "Kuspokuse" staircase by Petra Musilová (Czech Republic)
"Musilová, who is completing masters degree in Architecture and Urbanism, has aimed to create a number of standardized elements of a staircase which can be brought together in different ways to create individual designs. Like a puzzle, the elements of this staircase can be fitted together ‘kus-po-kuse’, which is Czech for ‘piece-by-piece’ a smart design that offers a bespoke end product."
