Submit your ideas to the 2020 eVolo Skyscraper Competition!

Mashambas Skyscraper. Pawel Lipiński, Mateusz Frankowski

The eVolo Skyscraper Competition is an annual call to architects, designers, and urban planners around the globe to explore new ideas for vertical living. It is an opportunity for novel exploration, dialogue, and critique. How can architecture and more specifically, skyscrapers, solve contemporary problems of urban living?

There is a necessity to offer innovative architectural solutions to the exponential increase in population, the scarcity of natural resources, the growth in social divisions, and the constant environmental threats. The competition looks for multi-layered solutions that envision the future of our cities and how to potentially redefine the way in which we live, work, and play.

The first edition of the competition was held in 2006 and since then, it has received thousands of submissions that have been documented in three books and hundreds of articles in diverse media outlets. The propagation of these ideas has been fascinating, as the competition has stepped outside the discourse of the architectural community and academia to reach the general public. Each year, the results are eagerly awaited by influential publications such as The Wall Street Journal or The Financial Times. Being able to share these fascinating projects with the largest number of people is crucial for the competition. The main goal is to influence architects and designers to think about skyscrapers in a new way to positively transform our cities. The proposed designs are seldom simple or finished projects but a collage of theories and solutions, which enable further investigations. The competition allows for the investigation of technological advances, sustainability, new aesthetics, and urban strategies.

At the core of the competition are the world-renowned architects and designers that have served as jurors. Their expertise and commitment to the competition goals has allowed a true revolution in the way that we conceive and understand high-rises.

The 2020 edition is open for worldwide participation and early registration closes on November 19, 2019. The submission deadline is February 11, 2020. If you would like to submit a project to the competition, please visit eVolo Magazine’s website for further details.
