The National Building Museum recently opened its latest exhibition Making Room: Housing for a Changing America, now open through September of 2018. The exhibition explores evolving demographics and lifestyles across America with the decline of nuclear family households prevalent in the 1950s to the increase in mixed and single living arrangements. Making Room looks to overcome innovation constraints in serving these developing lifestyles and expanding available options with new models and designs.

The exhibition features new typologies including The Open House, a flexible 1,000 square-foot home designed by architect Pierluigi Colombo. The design incorporates movable walls and multifunctional furniture to accommodate the expanding yet underserved small living space market. New typologies look to innovate in all sectors of the market from micro-units, tiny houses, and accessory apartments to co-housing, co-living, and beyond.
