Winners Announced in HP Skyline 2020 Online Competition

Winners have been announed in the HP Skyline 2020 online design competition. The competition brief stated, "We seek visions, not designs; a combination of architectural strategies with thought provoking concepts. The sky is literally the limit; there are no restrictions with regard to the choice of site, program or size. Participants are free to design their own brief and explore the themes potential. Armed with maximum liberty, participants must propose innovative ideas for this fascinating architectural genre. The scope of the design should not be limited to merely creation of an iconic image but rather to re-look at self-other, self-city, self-environment equations and discover the elusive state of equilibrium.".

The jury consisted of Christopher Charles Beninger, Patrik Schumacher, Sen Kapadia, and Hirante Welandawe.

HP SKYLINE 2020, the online design competition outlined fresh visual imaginations for the skyline discarding preconceived notions. Initiated by HP & AEC WorldXP, the competition created a gateway to open up infinite latent possibilities, which can transform our city and alter the way future generations experience the city through the lens of its skyline. Launched on 10th April 2010, it allowed students and professionals to partner and elucidate their visions and designs that would change the skyline thereby transforming the city itself. The competition saw over 300 professional and students participate with their astounding perception on the skyline of the future.

Sen Kapadia : New image of future cities with high density but loose clustering. Very sociable and humane living. Circulation needs clarification. This seems the ideal direction for changing the skyline, not visual but really culturally and ecologically sustainable. Variable elevations of different clusters promise also a future visual delight. Vary attainable proposal without demand on high technology. Here is a winner!

Sen Kapadia : Inspired clustering promising neighborhood redevelopment possibilities on a smaller scale. At urban scale it would pause difficulties in light, ventilation, circulation and privacy issues. This approach will have to be loosen for a larger canvas. May not be able to offer iconic landmark to define various urban definitions.

Starting with an improbable comparison, the entry leaps to a plausible conclusion. The delivered form successfully transforms into an urban landscape. It integrates traditional Indian elements of towns and cities in generating a modern edifice.

Sen Kapadia : Interesting non planner mathematical approach. Expanding fractals may be a good direction for a predictable growth. Alas, urban centers need controlled chaos.
