Iceland’s dramatic and breathtaking landscape makes it a popular tourist destination, providing views of black sand beaches, towering waterfalls, clear blue lagoons and frozen glaciers. Mývatn is the spectacular region in the north of Iceland that is home to some of the country’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, and is considered the Northern Lights Capital of Iceland. The lake region is home to Iceland's fourth largest body of water, Lake Mývatn, which is 36.5 square kilometres in size and is home to a wealth of natural wonders and wildlife.
Making up part of the Diamond Circle - a popular travel route in the north of Iceland - Lake Mývatn and the surrounding region are an idyllic location to go birdwatching, fishing, relax in the natural hot springs and explore the eerily beautiful lava fortress of Dimmuborgir and of course the unforgettable Hverfjall Volcano.
This seemed like the perfect place to construct a multipurpose exhibition hall that will also serve as the offices for the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland.
The Iceland Volcano Museum competition is the third in a series Iceland-based competitions, each with the potential to be considered for construction (making it the ideal time to take a site visit to the northern region of Iceland). For this competition participants are tasked with designing a multi-purpose space, the main function of which will be as an exhibition hall. The museum will also need to include amenities such as a café and reception area, as well as office plans and workspaces suitable for the competition partners to use as their main offices.
The Iceland Volcano Museum competition is open until November 1, with winners to be announced on December 18. Visit icelandvolcanomuseum.beebreeders.com for more information and to register.
