Six winners of the second phase of the Initiative 99 competition sponsored by ICON and juried by some of the industry’s biggest names were announced by the Texas-based 3D printing enterprise.

Entrants vying for the combined $1 million Phase 1 and 2 purse were asked to create 3D printed home designs that can be constructed for $99,000 or less. Winners will have their designs realized in an expansion of the nonprofit Austin’s Mobile Loaves & Fishes (MLF)’s Community First! Village supportive housing development beginning next year.

Melodie Yashar, VP of Building Performance and Design at ICON said: “We believe the designs generated by the competition introduce a wealth of ideas to advance progress on affordable housing worldwide.“

Some of the designs will be printed in BIG’s master plan for the El Cosmico resort community for hotelier Liz Lambert, which broke ground outside of Austin last month. Each of the first, second, and third place designs in either Student or Professional category will each have their home designs featured in a collection in ICON’s CODEX digital catalog. The three winners were joined by three Honorable Mention designs.

The jury included Bjarke Ingels, UCLA’s Mariana Ibanez, and UT Austin SoA department chair Michelle Addington, among others.
