Learn competition techniques from leading architects in “Competition Panels and Diagrams”

By Justine Testado|

Wednesday, Aug 10, 2016

“Competition Panels and Diagrams” by Benjamin Hossbach, Christian Lehmhaus, and Christine Eichelmann. Published by DOM publishers.

Surprise! We're happy to announce Bustler's very first book giveaway! Thanks to Berlin-based DOM publishers, we're giving Competition Panels and Diagrams to five of our readers. As part of DOM's Construction and Design Manual series, this volume sheds light on the intricate process behind architecture design competitions. If you're looking for inspiration on how to polish up your own competition submissions, this book is a handy reference.

Bound by bright orange hardcovers, the manual is packed with images, drawings, and noteworthy passages and essays that were specially curated by [phase eins] and co-authors Benjamin Hossbach, Christian Lehmhaus, and Christine Eichelmann — who have nearly 20 years of expertise in design competition management and consultation.

Read on for more about the book, and find out how to enter the giveaway (DEADLINE EXTENDED).

Highlighting 25 international projects from 2009 to 2015, the book presents the design methods, techniques, and drawings from current competitions by more than 500 leading architects. You'll find competition submissions from firms like Bjarke Ingels Group, David Chipperfield, UNStudio's Ben van Berkel, COOP Himmelb(l)au, Massimiliano Fuksas, Daniel Libeskind, 3XN, and more. Plus, you'll find historic drawings by Carlo Weber, Hans Pölzig, and Hans Scharoun.

The projects are supplemented by passages that explain the technical and formal criteria in presentation, in addition to addressing common disputes like the expenditure of prize money and architects’ fees. You can brush up on the history of architectural drawings in an essay written by Eva-Maria Barkhofen, head of architectural archives at the Akademie der Kuenste, and read a selection of theses and guest contributions by both judges and entrants.
