The City of Calgary presented the awards to the University of Calgary, the Calgary Health Region, and all other recipients on Tuesday June 10, 2008. The Calgary Awards were established to celebrate and recognize outstanding achievements and contributions made by Calgarians. Each year, individuals, corporations, community groups, schools, and organizations are nominated in five major award categories, for a total of 17 awards.

The University of Calgary Child Development Centre received the Environmental Achievement Award for an educational institution as recognition for the facility’s advanced technology, management, conservation, protection, enhancement, education, stewardship, and promotion of the city’s environment. The project has been highly recognized for its progressive sustainability standards. It is Canada’s largest LEED Platinum certified building.

The Alberta Children’s Hospital received the Award for Accessibility as recognition of the facility’s commitment to go above and beyond the minimum requirements of the Alberta Building Code for accessibility by persons with disabilities. Every area of the facility was designed to be accessible by wheelchair including exam rooms, playgrounds, and washrooms. Other features include a playground tree house with wheel chair access, a parkade designed with low-sloped floors to make it easier for wheelchair and stroller travel, motion sensored sliding doors, lowered counters at nurse stations and reception desks, and low placed windows and aquariums (760mm above floor elevation) to ensure all small children, including those in wheelchairs, can see the view.
