Kurgi Observation Tower architecture competition final registration deadline is approaching

In a remote part of Northern Europe, along the Latvian-Estonian border, lies a small eco-farm that just happens to be home to one of the rarest breeds of horse on the planet. The Latvian Ardennes is almost extinct, and Kurgi Farm has one of the four remaining studs left on Earth. This quiet little farm is nestled within the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-protected collection of nature parks and marine parks with some of the most breathtaking views in all of Europe.

In order to encourage more eco-tourism and bring more visitors to the farm, owners and founders Kristaps and Laura are making plans to construct a hilltop observation tower. The tower would offer guests unparalleled views of the natural surroundings, and could entice them to take advantage of the peace and tranquility of the farm, and the chance to experience therapeutic encounters with the Latvian horses.

As Kurgi farm has expressed an interest in the construction of this tower, designs will need to be both in keeping with the look and purpose of the North Latvia Biosphere Reserve, while having the potential to become an iconic landmark in its own right.

The Kurgi Observation Tower competition is tasking participants with creating innovative and exciting designs for the farm’s observation tower, while at the same time taking into consideration the delicate natural surroundings that must not be impacted during construction and operation.

The Kurgi Observation Tower competition is open until May 8, 2020, and the winners of the US $7,000 prize will be announced on July 9, 2020.
