Winners of UD4U's Abandoned Chrysler Automobile Plant Redevelopment in Wisconsin

UD4U set up the Abandoned Chrysler Automobile Plant Redevelopment competition inviting professional and student participants worldwide to create a new urban-design plan to revive the abandoned Chrysler Engine Plant in Kenosha, WI. The 107-acre site is the first mass-assembly automobile plant in the U.S, and is currently in a 5+ year remediation phase. UD4U set up the competition to raise awareness in the community about the site and spark dialogue on its future.

There was no specific program or design criteria, but proposals had to respond to four aspects that took Kenosha's local urban fabric into account: History of the Site and City, The Sites Surrounding Urban Fabric, Industries of Kenosha, and Transportation Options.

Starting with 43 registered teams from 17 countries (mostly from the U.S.), UD4U selected the final 15 entries. A guest jury then discussed the finalists and selected the top three winners and five honorable mentions.

UD4U’s long-term goal for the site is to see it redeveloped into its highest and best use from both a community and development viewpoint, where the resulting intervention will focus on more than just profit. Additionally, UD4U is currently in the process of finishing up their own research project and design proposal for the site, which they hope could potentially be used by the town to create a master plan.
