The Philip Merrill Environmental Center has been awarded the 2026 AIA Twenty-five Year Award, given each year to a building that has “set an architectural design standard of excellence for 25 to 35 years.” Designed by SmithGroup and completed in 2000, the scheme is described by the AIA as “a pioneering environmental headquarters” in Annapolis, Maryland.

Developed as the headquarters for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the building became the first in the world to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The scheme integrates passive environmental strategies, including natural ventilation, daylighting, and solar shading, to reduce energy consumption and improve occupant comfort.

The building’s narrow form is oriented to capture prevailing breezes, while operable vents support cross ventilation throughout the interior. The project also incorporates a range of resource-conscious systems and materials, including mass timber construction, structurally insulated panels, reclaimed wood, bamboo flooring, rainwater-harvesting infrastructure, and composting toilets.

“Today, the Philip Merrill Environmental Center stands as a touchstone for the profession,” the AIA said about the building. “Its legacy lies not only in its early adoption of sustainable strategies but in its enduring influence — proving that architecture, when guided by ecological principles and human values, can serve as a catalyst for lasting environmental and social change.”

News of the award comes one day after the AIA unveiled the winners of the 2026 AIA Architecture Awards. The winning designs can be found here.
