Splashed in vibrant shades of purple light, the Science Museum's fascinating “Mathematics” exhibition gallery is sure to lure in curious visitors. Aptly designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the Mathematics: Winton Gallery spans 400 years of how mathematics shaped our world. Completed in 2016, the Mathematics gallery was recently shortlisted in the RIBA 2017 London Awards. Delve into the project details below.

The permanent exhibition showcases over 100 objects from the Science Museum's world-class science, engineering, technology, and math collections that tell unique stories of the influential role that mathematics plays in our everyday lives.

At the same time, it reveals how mathematics has been shaped by “some of our most fundamental human concerns — from trade and travel to war, peace, life, death, form and beauty,” ZHA describes.

“Conceived as a wind tunnel for the largest object in the gallery – a Handley Page aircraft from 1929 – the space follows the lines of airflow around it in a stunning display of imagined aerodynamics.”

“Other objects in the gallery range from intriguing hand-held mathematical instruments to 19th-century human skulls, covering a time-span from the Renaissance to the present day.”
