2015 George Matsumoto Prize winners for North Carolina modernist homes

By Bustler Editors|

Thursday, Jul 30, 2015

1st Prize ($3000) – CUBE design + research, Chapel Hill, for the Aiyyer Residence in Carrboro, NC.

Educational nonprofit archive North Carolina Modernist Houses (NCMH) shows some hometown spirit in their annual George Matsumoto Prize for North Carolina Modernist residential architecture. First launched in 2012, the prize honors the significant contributions and work of American architect George Matsumoto, who designed some of North Carolina's most well-known midcentury homes. Now retired, Matsumoto was also a founding faculty member of North Carolina State University's College of Design.

As the only modernist-house prize of its kind in the state, the competition includes $6,000 in awards, a distinguished national jury, and online public voting that allows the broader community to participate. Designers could be based elsewhere, although projects were required to be in North Carolina.

In a recent ceremony, the 2015 competition concluded with the announcement of three jury prize winners and three People's Choice winners from the public vote.

This year's jury included: George Matsumoto as Honorary Chair, Oakland; Jeanne Gang of Studio/Gang, Chicago; Eric Gartner of SPG Architects, NYC; Bev Thorne, Oakland; Peter Gluck of GLUCK+, NYC; and Harry Bates of Bates Masi, Long Island.

Have a look at the winning projects below.

2nd Prize ($2000) – Tonic Design + Tonic Construction, Raleigh, for “Crabill Modern” in Hillsborough, NC.
3rd Prize ($1000) – in situ studio, Raleigh, for “Clark Court” in Raleigh, NC.

People's Choice winners:

PEOPLE'S CHOICE - 1st Place: Kersting Architecture, Wilmington, NC, for “Waterline” beach house in Wrightsville Beach, NC.
PEOPLE'S CHOICE - 2nd Place: Roost Homes, Asheville, for Peregrine #5 in Lakeview Park in Asheville, NC.
PEOPLE'S CHOICE - 3rd Place: Ann Clark Architects, Chicago, for the Knight Howard House in Deep Run, NC.
