Industry-leading consulting firm Arup will be presented with a National Building Museum Honor Award as part of the institution’s returned annual awards gala on June 16th.

The 76-year-old consultancy, which has eleven offices across the country, is being honored for its “seven decades of collaboration and creativity dedicated to shaping a better world through the built environment.”

“Arup has long been at the forefront of the most ambitious and challenging design and engineering projects,” said Museum Board Chair Anthony Greenberg. “With an intense focus on sustainability and innovation, the firm’s commitment to solving the most pressing problems impacting communities across the globe is exemplary and deserving of such an honor said in a statement.

The museum is also working with Arup to display its proprietary mLab technology until the 15th of August, providing climate-focused content to visitors of the Washington, D.C. institution. A museum announcement describes it as a “mobile environment combining audio, light, and virtual reality using 3D ambisonic sound”  that demonstrates how the firm’s decision-making process can be augmented by the use of “virtual, first-hand experience” using advanced VR and 3D audio technology.

Additionally, Arup is preparing to co-host a special virtual symposium on June 1st addressing the firm’s approach to social justice issues in the built environment. The program will feature Arup’s Americas Region Chair Fiona Cousins and is moderated by its Climate Services and Sustainability Leader Robert Kay. It will also “cover the power of digital technology, nature-based solutions, and community empowerment to move sustainable development from concept to action.”

Arup joins SOM, Perkins&Will, and The Urban Land Institute as past winners of the award now in its 35th year. More information about the museum’s programming can be found here.
