With six weeks left, you still have plenty of time to join Eleven’s current competition. Come and design a innovative life support system with Eleven’s seventh ideas and design competition Shelter 48. The magazine's current challenge invites creatives around the world to design a new innovative concept for an emergency life-support system capable of being deployed rapidly in the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster.
In recent years our planet is being battered by one disaster after another, leaving a trail of destruction behind them. These are getting more frequent and more violent...all we have to do is look at the past few months. Natural disasters kill thousands of people a year. Perhaps most surprising, is the fact that most often than not, the biggest killer isn’t the actual event itself, but the hours following the calamity. The lack of adequate protection and shelter, coupled with the obliteration of infrastructures and services and the scarcity of provisions, make the 48 hours post-disaster a highly critical zone for survivors.
How can architecture and design help protect, shelter and save lives?
Eleven's Shelter 48 competition is open for both students and professionals
who can participate individually or in teams of up to four people. Participants
are asked to submit their proposals online by the 11th of November in the
form of two digital A1 sheets and a 500-word explanation text. Models are
highly encouraged but are not mandatory.
The competition will close on the 11th of November at 11:00 am (UK Time). Be sure to register before the 1st of November to avoid the Late Bloomer fee. Awarded entries will be officially announced on the 11th of January. As the jury will deliberate behind the scenes to select their winner, runner-up and six honorable mentions, the general public will be given the chance to view all of the submitted entries and vote for their favorite who will go on to win the People's Choice Award.
Since Eleven's creation in mid-2015, the competitions created by this UK based group have received great international success. Previous challenges have been exhibited in Europe and the USA, published in multiple international magazines such as the Architecture Review, the AJ, Dezeen, Archdaily and Designboom, and have been featured in Bustler's 'Top-10 Best Competitions of the Year Awards' in both 2015 and 2016.
