NY Transportation Landmarks 50th anniversary exhibition to open on March 14

Need some weekend plans around NYC? The New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn will open their New York Transportation Landmarks exhibition, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the New York's Landmarks Law. The law contributed to the rediscovery and recognition of more than 30,000 architectural and historic structures throughout NYC.

Opening on March 14 at the Museum's Gallery Annex in Grand Central Terminal, the exhibition will highlight both the City's well known and its largely unknown landmarks. So even if you're familiar with New York's transportation system, you might learn something new!

"Many of New York City’s most important landmarks are linked to its transportation history.  As an island city, New York depends on its complex transit system – not just to guarantee the mobility of its residents, but also to facilitate commerce.  The transportation industry has, in fact, given the City some of its finest architectural monuments."

"The new exhibit tells the story of these transportation landmarks, and of their rescue and rehabilitation – railroad terminals, subway stations, airports, ferry and pier buildings, bridges, and landscaped parkways.  It focuses attention on the familiar major monuments such as Grand Central Terminal but also on less well-known sites such as the High Bridge, Macomb’s Dam Bridge, the Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia Airport, the Battery Maritime Building and Ocean Parkway, helping us all recognize the importance of these transportation landmarks."

The exhibition will run until November 1, 2015.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Transit Museum will present a special AfterHours program, A Lasting Legacy: Historic Preservation and the MTA, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24 at the Museum’s Downtown Brooklyn location. For more info + tickets, click here.
