Caples Jefferson Architects named 2017 recipient of AIANY's President's Award

On October 26, 2017, architects and industry professionals will come together in New York for the Heritage Ball. The annual, black tie event put on by the AIA New York Chapter,  honors the rich architectural heritage of New York City while celebrating the architects, officials, organizations, and professionals from related industries that carry on the city's tradition of design excellence.

Held at the Chelsea Piers, a number of awards and honors are presented at the gala including the President's Award, which commemorates an architect, still active and in mid-career, whose work has made a significant impact on New York City. Given solely at the discretion of the Chapter President, past winners include Henry Cobb, I.M Pei, and more recently Gregg Pasquarelli of SHoP and Bruce Fowle of FXFOWLE. Following in their footsteps, Caples Jefferson Architects has just been announced as the latest recipient to take home the title this coming fall.

Founded in 1987 by Sara Caples and Everardo Jefferson, the practice is known for designing buildings that engage with social, cultural, and community concerns and serve as civic anchors in the public realm. Sara Caples stated "the firm’s New York City projects are truly emblematic of the core values we embraced when we established the firm; evolving artistic ideas based on deep research, intensive interactions with working communities, and our broader architectural tradition."

Her partner and fellow recipient, Everardo Jefferson expanded on the sentiment saying "our goal—specifically with our New York City-based projects—is to create moments in time and space that provide a sense of sustenance, inner poetry, and an awareness of being valued. This is particularly important in underserved neighborhoods where good, sustainable design is rare. "
