In just a few weeks, the Van Alen Institute will ring in the holiday season with a new architectural installation from the third annual Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition in New York City. This past June, Van Alen and the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership invited LOT, Architensions, Büro Koray Duman Architects, FreelandBuck, and Young & Ayata to design a temporary installation to be built at the center of NYC's Flatiron District during the holidays. The jury decided to award the commission to LOT's proposal, “Flatiron Sky-Line”.

Once it's built in time for the holiday season, “Flatiron Sky-Line” will show off 10 large contiguous arches constructed of white power-coated steel tubes illuminated by LED lights. Each arch will also feature a suspended hammock, on which passers-by can sit and relax and admire the district's architectural surroundings.
Flatiron Sky-Line will be the first large-scale public installation in NYC for LOT, an architecture and design firm based in NYC and Greece. Directed by principals Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis, LOT has designed at various scales — from objects to showrooms to buildings — all across the globe.
“Flatiron Sky-Line is an engaging installation, creating a social space underneath the illuminated arched outline, a structure to walk within and around, gaze through it towards the skyline, and experience Flatiron’s surroundings through a certain lens,” says Leonidas Trampoukis. “The simplicity of the installation’s design will draw in audiences, and, we expect, produce significant feelings as they stand in one of our country’s most recognizable intersections.”
Flatiron Sky-Line will make its public debut on November 21 at the North Flatiron Public Plaza (at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street). People can visit the installation throughout the holiday season during the Partnership's “23 Days of Flatiron Cheer” programming.
