The 2014 Serpentine Pavilion by Smiljan Radic is revealed in Kensington Gardens, London

Chilean architect Smiljan Radic has unveiled the 14th Serpentine Pavilion at the Serpentine Gallery's Kensington Gardens in London. Since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery has invited renowned architects like Sou Fujimoto, Jean Nouvel, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron with Ai Wei Wei, and Peter Zumthor to design the temporary outdoor structure, which continues to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Radic accepted the Gallery's invitation this past March.

In addition to the fame factor of the pavilions' designers, the structures themselves are their own spectacle. Radic's design for the 14th Serpentine Pavilion is already receiving plenty of colorful descriptions like: An eggshell. A "Stone Age spaceship". A cocoon. A deformed donut.

Read more about it below.

Supported by massive quarry stones, Radic's pavilion is a fiberglass, semi-transparent hollow shell that will be used to host a variety of social and cultural events and will also include a cafe inside. To further emphasize the structure's interaction with the Kensington Gardens' landscape, the pavilion's flooring features gray wooden decking to make the structure feel more like a patio than an enclosed space.

Adding a contemporary twist to the architectural folly concept, Radic drew inspiration from his earlier works for the Serpentine Pavilion's shelllike design -- specifically The Castle of the Selfish Giant (which was inspired by the Oscar Wilde story, "The Selfish Giant") and the Restaurant Mestizo.

The Serpentine Pavilion will be open to the public for free starting Thursday, June 26 until October 19, 2014.
