The winning titles of the 2019 Society of Architectural Historians Publication and Film & Video Awards

By Justine Testado|

Wednesday, May 22, 2019

Curious about which top-notch architectural history publications to check out? Perhaps you'd like to look into the winning titles of the 2019 Society of Architectural Historians' Publication and Film and Video Awards. As its name states, the yearly Publication Awards honor the best published narratives on architectural history, urban history, landscape history, and historic preservation scholarship, as well as architectural exhibition catalogues. The Film and Video award program distinguishes outstanding works of film and video on the history of the built environment, with no geographic or political boundaries limiting subject matter or production team. Recipients were presented with their awards during a ceremony at the SAH's 72nd Annual International Conference in Providence, R.I. on April 25.

Scroll down for a look at this year's winning titles.

↓ Alice Davis Hitchcock Book Award - established in 1949 to recognize annually the most distinguished work of scholarship in the history of architecture published by a North American scholar.

Madhuri Desai, “Banaras Reconstructed: Architecture and Sacred Space in a Hindu Holy City”, University of Washington Press, 2017.

↓ Antoinette Forrester Downing Book Award - recognizes excellence in a published work devoted to historical topics in preservation and honors her scholarship and recognition of the value of local inventories and surveys.

Cameron Logan, “Historic Capital: Preservation, Race, and Real Estate in Washington, D.C.”, University of Minnesota Press, 2017.
Daniela Sandler, “Counterpreservation: Architectural Decay in Berlin since 1989”, Cornell University Press, 2016.

↓ Philip Johnson Exhibition Catalogue Award - established in 1990 to recognize and encourage excellence in architectural history scholarship in exhibition catalogs.

Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Dieter Bogner, Maria Lind, Barbel Vischer, editors, “Friedrich Kiesler Lebenswelten / Life Visions: Architektur Kunst Design / Architecture Art Design”, MAK / Birkhäuser, 2016.

↓ Spiro Kostof Book Award - established in 1993 in recognition of Spiro Kostof's extraordinarily productive and inspiring career. In the spirit of Kostof's writings, the award recognizes interdisciplinary studies of urban history that make the greatest contribution to our understanding of the growth and development of cities.

Alona Nitzan-Shiftan, “Seizing Jerusalem: The Architectures of Unilateral Unification”, University of Minnesota Press, 2017.

↓ Elisabeth Blair MacDougall Book Award - established in 2005 to recognize annually the most distinguished work of scholarship in the history of landscape architecture or garden design. Named for SAH past president and landscape historian Elisabeth MacDougall, the award honors the late historian's role in developing this field of study.

Elizabeth Kryder-Reid, “California Mission Landscapes: Race, Memory, and the Politics of Heritage”, University of Minnesota Press, 2016.
Mark Laird, “A Natural History of English Gardening”, Yale University Press, 2015.

↓ Founders’ Award - established in 1970, the Founders’ Award recognizes an article published by an emerging scholar in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians that exhibits excellence of scholarship and presentation.

Anooradha Iyer Siddiqi, “Architecture Culture, Humanitarian Expertise: From the Tropics to Shelter, 1953–93”, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Vol. 76 No. 3, September 2017.

↓ SAH Award for Film and Video - recognizes the most distinguished work of film or video on the history of the built environment. The most important criterion is the work’s contribution to the understanding of the built environment, defined either as deepening that understanding or as bringing that understanding to new audiences.

Laura Artigas and Pedro Gorski, Directors, “Vilanova Artigas: The Architect and The Light”, Gal Buitoni and Luiz Ferraz, Producers, 2015.
