German architect Sebastian Treese was announced today as the 2021 laureate of the Richard H. Driehaus Prize at the University of Notre Dame.

The jury recognized Treese and the work of his Berlin-based firm Sebastian Treese Architekten for representing a "new generation of European architects with the intellectual grounding and commitment to carefully re-examine the nature of building in the modern world."

"The firm is reinterpreting the lessons of the past to produce a new traditional architecture and urbanism that embodies the culture, climate, and physical order of existing places and represents the values associated with open and just societies," reads the jury citation.

Treese will be honored with the $200,000 prize during a virtual ceremony on March 26.

In conjunction with the Driehaus Prize, the University of Notre Dame also announced that John Reps, a historian of urban planning, will be posthumously honored with the $50,000 Henry Hope Reed Award. The recognition is given annually to an individual "working outside the practice of architecture who has supported the cultivation of the traditional city, its architecture, and art."
