BIG's 2016 Serpentine Pavilion and the new Summer Houses make their public debut

Bjarke Ingels' Serpentine Pavilion and the four new Summer Houses officially opened to the public at London's Kensington Gardens today. Since Serpentine Galleries Director Julia Peyton-Jones launched the exhibition in 2000, the Serpentine Pavilion has been interpreted into a range of styles, so guessing what the next pavilion will look like is all part of the fun. Over the years, the Serpentine Galleries has shown off pavilions designed by architects like the late Zaha Hadid, Sou Fujimoto, Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron with Ai Wei Wei, Peter Zumthor, SANAA, Smiljan Radic, and SelgasCano.

In her final year of directorship at the Galleries, this year's Serpentine exhibition was extra ambitious with the inclusion of four new 25 square-meter Summer Houses that had to be built in time for opening day. The Galleries invited four additional notable designers — Barkow Leibinger, Kunlé Adeyemi/NLÉ, Yona Friedman, and Asif Khan — to take their own creative approach to reinterpreting the historic Queen Caroline's Temple summer house. The pavilions will be open until October 9.
