Nonscale's "Sky Pavilion" sundial wins 2015 Triumph Pavilion competition

ArchTriumph's 2015 Triumph Pavilion competition had entrants worldwide submit proposals for an outdoor temporary pavilion that best represented this year's theme, "Sky", and its relationship to architectural design. The winning design would be publicly installed at London's Museum Gardens for the summer season. The annual Triumph Pavilion competition promotes architectural experimentation and exploration through form, function, and materials.

Tokyo-based practice Nonscale won the competition over reportedly hundreds of submissions from around the world. Their proposal features a "fallen North Star" along with smaller stars, and the pavilion's base is etched with a sundial that will tell the time of day as the sun moves across the sky. At night, the illuminated installation grabs the attention of passers-by with colored lights.

Project details: "The resulting Pavilion is a self-supporting structure measuring approximately 4m in height and 62m² in area, constructed primarily out of stainless steel composite and supported by solid steel core and structured steel ground anchors with carbon steel heads. The entire structure weighs approximately 2,004kg with the large stars weighing 60kg and the small stars 27kg; all supported within an interlocking link and ground base plate system to create an intriguing presentation with its mirrored platform base."
