Matri-Archi(tecture)'s 'Homeplace' examines spatial practices through a diasporic lens

A new installation from the group Matri-Archi(tecture) at the Architekturmuseum der TUM in Munich currently invites visitors to discourse on the nature of spatial design and human habitation via different African and other diasporic rituals, expressions, and forms of construction.

“Homeplace – A Love Letter,” which just opened to the public over the weekend, is staged in the Rotunda at the Pinakothek der Moderne and offers viewers an atmospheric space divided into a stunning three-part harmony.

Connected by a beaded canopy that extends from floor to ceiling, the installation includes a diaspora-influenced soundscape and was activated by a special imbizo (Zulu for gathering) that took place during the exhibition’s vernissage.

Matri-Archi(tecture) describes: “Through assemblages of textile, sound and storytelling — mythical, speculative and performative — the installation explores commonalities and possible forms of place-making by centering the homeplace as a place that is both affective and intimate, revealing the dimensions of personal, interpersonal and embodied experiences of belonging.”

Matri-Archi(tecture)'s contributors Afaina de Jong, Abdé Batchati, Aisha Mugo, Margarida Waco, and Khensani Jurczok-de Klerk were responsible for the installation. 

The collective describes itself as “an association that hosts a network of intersectional spatial practitioners dedicated to the development of African spatial education.” Recent exhibitions have graced the Vitra Design Museum and 2021 Chicago Architectural Biennial.

“Homeplace” will remain on view until March 24, 2024.
