A closer look at Studio MK27's stunning modernist SP_Penthouse

Studio MK27's SP_Penthouse isn't Don Draper's never-before-seen getaway from a lost episode of “Mad Men”, although it can surely pass as a set for the TV show with all those modernist furnishings. The three-floor penthouse in Sao Paulo looks incredibly spacious with vast walls of shelves and careful design details. On top of that, reddish and beige tones keep the house's atmosphere wonderfully cozy.

Since its completion last year, the SP_Penthouse has attracted considerable attention in notable design competitions, like the 2016 AZ Award and the upcoming INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors. The designers themselves have been in the international spotlight as well for other Sao Paulo projects like the Cultura Bookstore.

Read on for more about the SP_Penthouse.

Studio MK27's main objective for the SP_Penthouse was to create an interior with spatial continuity and a “cozy and solemn atmosphere”, the architects state. “Infinite circulations accentuate the fluidity between the spaces and configure functional pathways — of a clear understanding to the residents and their guests.” The architects employed careful, precise architectural detailing and furnishings to create a cohesive interior filled with “surprises and emotions” in every single area of the house.

The house's large corridors aren't mere passageways, but serve as galleries for the client's art collection. The fixed furniture of the house “would be in harmony with the classical design objects”, which include original designer furniture pieces by figures like Hugo França, Hans Wegner, Franco Albini, Gio Ponti, and more.

The Late terra wood surfaces and corten steel plaques that were applied to the house's interior surfaces add to Studio MK27's concept of spatial continuity. As for flooring, the bedrooms have wooden floors while gathering areas are decked in luxurious travertine marble. Reddish tones from the wood panels and upholstery complement the hints of ochre and beige, which create an overall sense of warmth and coziness.

Subtly organized by large carpets, gathering spaces like the living room are furnished with floor lighting, lighting fixtures, sofas, club chairs, and end tables.

The penthouse's three-floor configuration has the bedrooms on the first floor, while the kitchen, home office, dining room, and living room occupy the second floor. The third floor has a covered pool, a lush garden, a gym, and perhaps the house's most notable feature: the library, which shows off floor-to-ceiling wooden shelves and large windows that offer views of Sao Paulo.
