TRANSFER announces winner of second annual Architecture Video Award

By Josh Niland|

Tuesday, Nov 9, 2021

Still from Split Lives by Joshua Bolchover and John Lin.

The winner of this year's TRANSFER Architecture Video Award has been announced after a year-long hiatus.

Launched in 2019, the award honors creative ways of exploring architecture and urban life using short video formats that have a critical potential to shape the way in which architectural media is consumed.

This year's winning entry came from Hong Kong, and architect/filmmaker Joshua Bolchover, a lecturer at HKU, described his film Split Lives as depicting "the vernacular typology of the underground earth houses in China" while simultaneously  elucidating "the dialectic between the past and the present, the traditional and the generic, and the rural and the urban that shapes and configures China’s contemporary condition.”

Bolchover is one-half of the research team (along with John Lin) behind the influential Rural Urban Framework.

Their film was joined by four Honorable Mentions, including an entry from Ireland and three from the UK. Each film was honored in an October 29th ceremony held at Switzerland's Musée Cantonal de Beaux-Arts. A full list of honorees can be seen below.

Winner

Split Lives, Joshua Bolchover and John Lin, Hong Kong, 2021

Honorable Mentions

Not by Bricks Alone, Archie Cantwell, Ireland, 2019

Art Barn, Jim Stephenson, United Kingdom, 2020

A Short History of the Elevator Pitch, Ines Weizman, United Kingdom, 2020

Grounded, Tapio Snellman, United Kingdom / Philippines, 2019
