Here's a better look into the first-place entry of the West Kowloon Arts Pavilion Design Competition by VPANG architects ltd + JET Architecture Inc + Lisa Cheung.
Their proposal 'Floating Art Platform' will be realized into the new Arts Pavilion as part of the growing development of Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District.
The pavilion is set to be constructed by 2015.
Project description:
"The design intention, through a smart simplistic approach, is to create a floating art platform elevated from city noise and pollution, but at the same time blended in to the surrounding environment. Indoor exhibition glass wall panels are operable to connect with the surrounding landscape, creating opportunities for outdoor exhibitions in accordance with various climates and functions."
"Set deep within the Park, the pavilion’s main exhibition space and open deck, being lifted up from ground level of the Park, is cantilevered out from a berm floating amongst the trees and foliage. The northeast approach is a simple and welcoming connection with steps down towards the park in the direction of M+ Museum. Visitors from the waterfront promenade entry along the curved ramp wrapping around the central green berm gently up to the pavilion platform, where artworks can be appreciated amidst the backdrop of Hong Kong."
"Without complicated connection detail and energy-efficient, reinforced concrete is mainly used for construction. Given the Pavilion’s proximity to the harbour and Hong Kong’s humid climate, it is a durable against the humid climate. Inside, gallery spaces are created by polished concrete floors and white walls – a flexible backdrop for multidisciplinary art exhibitions and performances. Mirror finish panels on the exterior camouflages the architecture, reflecting the surrounding expanses of greenery, blending into the landscape."
