Making in London – a practical demonstration | 11 November

As part of this year's NLA WRK/LDN Insight Study, a series of lunchtime discussions will take place. These free, fast-paced talks aim to look at the impact of Brexit on London's Makers, and how London forms part of the bigger picture when it comes to creating great work, developing resilience, and attracting and retaining talent. This event in particular focuses on the diversity within manufacturing, and how this affects the surroundings.

Tour: Tate for the Timid | 9 November

Modern Art is arguably challenging, both in subject matter and to the unaccustomed eye. Breaking down the barriers between high art and the general public, this tour aims to take a group on a tour of the current works on view at the Tate Modern.

Tour: Award Winning Regent High School | 9 November

Regent High school, by Walters and Cohen Architects, won not only the RIBA London Award (2016), but the National Award (2016) and the RIBA London Sustainability Award (2016). This architect-lead tour is a unique opportunity to explore this highly reviewed building, and to understand what inspired the architects, and the stories behind the award-winning design.

Lord Mayor's Day | 12 November

London is famous for its rich history, and for being just a little bit more independent than other UK cities; in 1215, The King issued a Royal Charter, allowing the capitol to govern itself. As part of the ceremony of this continuing governance, each Lord Mayor must travel from the City to Westminster to sear loyalty to the crown.  The modern day ‘Lord Mayor’s Procession is an echo of that very first journey, and reflects the rich culture of London, and its eccentricities. From family activities and processions, to exhibitions; there are events throughout the day to celebrate the new Lord Mayor, and London’s history.

Talk - Incidentally a Woman: Equality in Architecture | 10 November

The current gender pay gap means that women effectively stop earning (relative to men) on a day in November. Calculated by the Fawcett Society, the ‘Equal Pay Day’ falls on 10th November for 2016. Bringing journalists and architects together on this symbolic date, this panel-led talk will discuss issues of equality in architecture. Chaired by Dr Harriet Harriss, the evening will move through the careers of both men and women within the architectural field, sparking ideas for change, which can hopefully be put into practice in the future.

The Contemporary Crafts & Design Fair: Handmade in Britain | 11-13 November

Kicking off the Christmas markets for 2016 is ‘Handmade in Britain 16: The Contemporary Crafts & Design Fair’ at Chelsea Old Town Hall. The showcase of handmade goods is now in its 10th year, and proves to be a fantastic event to get some unique pieces from high-end UK makers before the panic of shopping in December.
