Every year YACademy guarantees its alumni a series of internship and collaboration experiences with some of the most well-renowned architectural firms as post-training experiences and as a bridge to the world of work. This was the case for young designers (Alba Caja, Vibha Chourasia, Nevenka Krželj and Santiago Martinez) who were guided by Andreas Fries, partner of Herzog & de Meuron in the collaboration.

In February 2022, the YACademy’s Alumni had the opportunity to participate in a project – which will be built soon – for the renewal of the Cesare Roversi headquarters, one of the most relevant made in Italy excellence in the field of customized furniture.

Led by the Swiss firm Herzog & De Meuron, one of the groups was assigned to modify the roof of the building. The goal of this expansion is to increase the production and storage space around the cutting area and therefore optimize the storage of materials before their production.

The historical company, located in Moglia, which is currently collaborating with masters of design such as Sottsass, Scarpa and De Lucchi, has embarked on a path of renewal which will lead, by 2023, to host some interventions designed by young designers, developed in collaboration with some of the most prestigious architectural firms in the world: Mario Cucinella Architects, Herzog & De Meuron, SANAA, Bjarke Ingels Group, David Chipperfield Architects.

Focusing on the project developed under the supervision of Andreas Fries, YACademy alumni reflected on the realization of a pavilion located in the heart of the company production, with a double function of storage and recreation but also exhibition.

The project is elegantly placed between the two buildings dedicated to the production, creating a volume that under a large wooden barrel vault solves a misalignment of the entrances through a diagonal corridor, which thanks to the glass facades, generates dynamic and innovative perspectives. The project is also a tribute to the artisan skills of Cesare Roversi, showing high-quality details and finishes that enhance the history and the DNA of the company.

The project, born in Moglia, has been presented by the students to Cesare Roversi in Basel, at Herzog & de Meuron headquarters. During the three-day experience in Basel, the Alumni also had the opportunity to visit the Cabinet and the Stadtcasino, where architect Michele De Lucchi also took part.
