Six shortlisted for 2015-16 World Design Impact Prize

As long as the world's most pressing social issues continue to persist, so will the need for design that could lead the way to alleviating them. Now in its third cycle, the World Design Impact Prize shortlist for 2015-2016 was recently revealed. Established in 2011 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), the biennial prize highlights industrial-design projects that carry the strongest potential to bring tangible positive impact.

Out of 82 submissions this year, the Prize's Review Panel shortlisted six projects that address various problems.
In the following months, the ICSID membership — which consists of over 160 organizations worldwide — will vote to select three finalists and then the winner. Finalists are scheduled to be announced on January 12, 2016. The award will then be presented to the winner during the World Design Capital International Design Gala in Taipei, Taiwan in March 2016.

Warka Water

Project summary: "The Warka Water, currently piloted in Dorze, Ethiopia, is a community-run structure that collects between 50 and 100 liters of safe drinking water a day from either rain or fog. It is also meant to act as a shaded meeting point for the community."
HappyTap

Project summary: "Using a sustainable, market-based approach to hygiene, the HappyTap is helping combat the spread of diarrhea and other transmissible diseases through the promotion of handwashing. With the help of USAID funds, the device is now available for sale throughout Vietnam and Cambodia."
RE:BUILD

Project Location: Zaatari Refugee Camp (Jordan)
Project summary: "Built by the refugees who will benefit from it, RE:BUILD is a re-deployable, modular, durable structure that uses local materials to create the walls. A RE:BUILD school is currently in use at the Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan."
Lumkani Fire Detector

Project summary: "A networked heat detector designed for informal settlements, Lumkani fights the devastation caused by the spread of fires in urban slums by creating a community wide early warning."
INVELOX on Palmyra Atoll

Project Location: Palmyra Atoll
Project summary: "Invelox is a cost effective, high performance energy generation system that eliminates low-frequency noise, vibration and flicker issues. It can generate electricity with low speed winds and is also safe for birds. It is currently used by The Nature Conservancy on Palmyra Atoll."
IHearYou

Project summary: "Thanks to technological breakthroughs in cochlear implants, IHearYou enables people to take a hearing test, order and adjust their hearing aids remotely at less than half the cost of traditional hearing aids."
