MyMovieStudio uses crowdsourcing to develop, finance, and produce feature films. Users post original ideas that they want to see up on the big screen, and users decide as a group (by awarding Green Lights, or votes) which of their ideas should be made into movies.

We’re now putting out a call for entries in the form of movie pitches. No preference is given to movie pitches accompanied by great poster art but we have a strong feeling that pitches supported by great promotional art will win the member-judged pitch contest. Hence this posting on Bustler!

When the user base reaches critical mass, we plan to form an investment vehicle and issue $100 shares for sale to members. We hope to raise $6 million (60,000 shares at $100 each) to finance three $2 million films selected by the membership. When the films are financed, the three winning Movie Pitch authors will receive $25,000, sole STORY BY credit on the screenplays and movies based on their ideas, and trips to their own red carpet premieres.

The idea grew out of our observation that almost everyone is displeased with what’s available at the multiplex, but putting together your own movie as an independent writer, director, or producer is nearly impossible. MyMovieStudio represents a way for thousands of people on an individual level to have films they can call their own (quite literally the shares represent actual equity stakes in the slate of films, so when the films make money, the investors make money).

We’re just getting started. Early entries have an advantage in that they have more time to collect Green Lights. Submission is free, and no investment is required in order to award Green Lights or participate in the pitch contest. For more information and to post your movie pitch, go to http://mymoviestudio.net.

Thanks and good luck!

We invite everyone to participate—designers, art directors, architects, design firms, manufacturers, institutions, ad agencies, students and novices may enter and enjoy the Spark Design Awards.

Graphics, product, transportation and architecture are just a few of the many design categories accepted. If you or your company create great designs, don’t miss the opportunity to compete in this important event. To accommodate the greatest possible range of designs and designers, and to lower the initial cost of entry, the SparkAwards are now configured as a “two-phase” competition—just like a sports playoff series. In Phase One, the entrant will upload an image of their work and short description to the Spark website. The Phase One fee is US$125.

You can register on the website now—click here. The first phase (virtual jury) final deadline is August 1. Phase One entrants chosen by the Jury will then have the option to participate in Phase Two, as a “Spark Candidate,” with payment of a second fee of $250. Phase Two Jurists will judge the actual, physical works of design, so you’ll need to ship your design to the Jury site.

All designers, art directors, design firms and departments, ad agencies, marketing and branding practices, clients, manufacturers and student or novice designers are welcome to join us. Spark accepts and promotes a wide range of design, designers and “creatives.” As you’ll see on our Categories page, this ranges from product design to advertising, digital animation to brick and mortar architecture. Professional Category admission is for designs launched on the market by May 2008 or no more than four years previously (from May 04). Students and novices (non-professionals) may enter each category, without their product being in production. (Proof of status required to win.) Each entrant may enter as many products as they wish.

There are awards for concept or prototype design—innovative designs that have yet to find a manufacturer or are in preliminary stages of development. Spark will also try to identify and highlight serious aspirational designs.

Each entrant may submit any number of products. There will be a two-stage competition process. The first stage will entail a ‘virtual’ online entry submission. After phase one judging, those entries that are deemed to be ‘Candidates’ will go on to the second phase. Each phase has a separate fee.

For phase two, jury decisions are made from the actual product or graphics (when feasible). Large equipment, interiors, public spaces, buildings, digital and website design all may be submitted as visuals. Most other designs are best judged in physical, production or published form. Please note—designs should not be sent to Spark prior to the published delivery date.

Theme
Architecture Coexisting with World Heritage Sites

Brief
Currently, there are 851 World Heritage Sites. Natural heritage sites, cultural heritage sites and mixed heritage sites have been designated by UNESCO as monuments that have a universal value and should be shared by all mankind. The history within these sites tells us about our past, and by adding new sites, we help weave important moments of our history for future generations. We must not lose the historical interconnectedness that is created by these sites.

Historical heritages sites must be more that simply preserved in their current condition in order to maintain their relevance for the future:
people ought to be able to visit these heritages sites and learn from them.
Yet we must prevent the damage and environmental destruction that crowds of visitors create. The logistics of creating a world Heritages Site which both caters to a great number of visitors and which can be protected from the wear and strain on it caused by the public are central concerns in designing a plan such as this.

To achieve this aim, this year’s theme is “Architecture coexisting with World Heritage Sites.”

Applicants are free to choose any World Heritage Site, however they must make clear the reason for choosing that site. Applicants are also free to select any type of architecture to coexist with the site. There will certainly be many types of architecture, such as information booths, exhibition halls, hotels, restaurants, and viewing platforms. We would like proposals to show how the architecture will interact with the context and practical constraints of the World Heritage site.
Coexistence is not assimilation, nor is it harmony. It is two ideas coming from different premises that come together and raise the overall merit of the project by complementing each other.

I hope the competitors’ proposals will be intellectually enriching and beneficial to the meaning and significance of the World Heritage Site while at the same time present the attractiveness that can be found in contemporary architecture.

Submission Deadline
No later than July 25(Friday), 2008.

An international jury will include, amongst others, designers Louise Campbell (DK) and Adam Goodrum (AU), Philips Senior Creative Director Oscar Peña (CO/NL) and captains of industry and CEOs Marnick Smessaert (BE) and Alasdhair Willis (UK). They will examine the entries and decide on the deserving winners. Eleven prominent companies are sponsoring prizes to a total value of 35,000 euro.

Apart from the honours, the prize money and the nominations, the international competition is also the ideal platform for budding designers to be discovered. All entries will be on display during the 21st Interieur Biennale, where they will be seen by potential manufacturers, professional visitors and the general public.

Previous editions featured more than 150 young designers. This year’s competition again promises to feature highly creative designers aiming to conquer the markets. Twenty six international magazines from Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Russia, Turkey, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States are supporting the competition. Now is the time to register!

Imagine every town. Remember where you grew up, a place shaped by
your first walk, your first love, your first amazement at color and form and
other people; your first humiliation when you couldn’t find your way or
weren’t part of the group. Recall the sights, the sounds, the dirt on the
street, the wind rustling through the trees, the day the garbage was picked
up and the day before that, the trip downtown or to the airport, the place
where what you knew slowly shaded over into an uncharted territory that
itself receded the older you became.

Maybe you still live in this city, or visit it because your family is there.
Maybe you never lived there but grew up in the countryside or in a
high-rise. Deep in our culture, however, is the notion that a small-scale
community, whether by itself or as the neighborhood in a larger city, is
at the core of what connects us not just to a place, but to a sense of
community. These days, such places arise and disappear much more
quickly than at any time in human history. If we cannot live there long
enough to make them our own, and if they cannot develop over time, what
makes them real places that create social and physical foundations for our
experience of the world?

Certainly architecture is not the answer, at least not in the traditional
sense of the word. It is unlikely that monuments or recognizable structures
such as churches or banks were ever anything either placeholders or late
appearances in the forming of community. It is the texture, the changing,
decaying and growing collective of built form that allows a community
cohere long enough to evoke memories. These days we wonder whether
we can create such communities virtually, or at a global scale. But what
if we ask the question the other way around and wonder whether the
techniques developed in the world beyond bricks and stone, wood, steel,
plastics and concrete, can help us shape a more ephemeral, quicker to rise
and faster to disappear, community. Can we build the character of place
instantly and let it fade away without fear?

Now consider the following situation:

EveryVille is a new exurban community that has emerged around the
intersection of Avenue Z and X Street, just to the Southwest of the
intersection of Highway 1 and the Beltway around Megalopolis, about 20
kilometers from the city’s core. Making good use of the flat, featureless
terrain that used to support dairy farming, developers have carved the
plains here into several subdivisions that by now house over 20,000
inhabitants. Analysts expect that the whole 25-square kilometer area that
used to be the historic Big A and Small B farms can eventually support as
many as 50,000 inhabitants and perhaps even more.

Along the edges of town, retail establishments have grown up, mainly
along the roads that lead from the interchanges off both the Beltway and
Highway 1. They include one shopping mall, which contains 25,000 square
feet of retail space, a strip mall with about 15,000 square feet of space,
and many smaller strip malls and fast-food outlets. A new Unified School,
housing 2,000 high school students, is under construction at Avenue Y
and W Street, while two small grade schools exist on Avenues P and S.
They are each designed to accommodate about 500 students. There is an
office park, Executive Park I, that has 7,500 square meters of fully leased
space, right where Avenue H links up with the Beltway exit. Another office
development, as of yet unnamed, but projected to have 12,500 square
meters of leasable space, is planned at the exit of Highway 1 onto Avenue B.

The land on which EveryVille is built consists of flat, clay-based soil.
The prevailing winds are from the West-Northwest. The temperature is
moderate, with occasional frost and snow in the winter and hot and humid
periods in July and August. There is a notable range of mountains, the
Tall Ones, about 40 kilometers to the North. Megalopolis is located at
a bend in the Medium River. The main industry in the area is based on
telecommunication: there are several very large call centers in the region,
and the headquarters for Universal Telecom is on the Western outskirts of
Megalopolis. The total metropolitan area is approximately 2.5 million.

EveryVille was just incorporated as a separate town, with a City Council of
five members. The member who receives the most votes is the mayor for a
four-year term. The city is looking into establishing its own fire and police
departments. It is currently operating from the County Building, a multi-
purpose set of offices on Avenue R. Now the City Council has to decide
how to give EveryVille coherence and identity. In a heated meeting in
December of 2007, several factions proposed different strategies. Some felt
that there was no government necessary, but that a strong police should
operate from a monumental building that would have a jail attached.
Others felt that EveryVille should develop around a unified school building
that would eventually also have a (junior) college or trade school, and
that this campus should include civic functions. Yet a third group wanted
a more traditional city hall that would serve as the new community’s core.

But most of the participants felt that nothing of the sort was necessary, for
civic buildings were a waste of money and time. “We need a Starbuck’s,
that’s a real civic amenity,” was the final comment of the meeting.

In the end, the City Council voted to hire an architect to decide the
question of how to give EveryVille a focal point, a place or method of
identity, and a home for shared services. They felt that architects would
have the expertise to determine whether any new buildings would be
necessary to do this, or whether what was really needed was a method
of creating common and shared space with a clear and distinct EveryVille
identity. The use of commercial spaces in this effort was to be included.
The Mayor in particular believes that what services there may be should
be integrated into the school, the office park or the shopping area, so that
they would be part of EveryVille’s everyday life, and that what is really
needed is a program that moves beyond buildings to create a character
for this community. Above all else, she thinks that this character should
take the form not just of identity programs and focal points, but also of
guidelines that will help EveryVille grow as a cohesive, environmentally
sane and participatory community.

To accomplish this task, EveryVille has therefore set out a Request for
Proposals in which architects are asked to suggest how they might create
an image, a coherence, a character and a civic sense for this small town,
appropriate to its location and to its history, its site and its future. The
proposal can be idiosyncratic. It may even be utopian. It should certainly
be an evocation of a real place of community where there is right now
none and that may be again just a series of fragments in sprawl a decade
from, it should be an EveryVille of the imagination and of memory, of hope
and of fear.

The proposal must take the form of a series of drawings that will allow
citizens to see what EveryVille will look like in ten years, and how that
community will make sense through the medium of architecture:

one jpg file (dimension: 945×450 pixel, max 200 kb) that will
include several drawings, among which at least one 3D general view
of the project (admitted techniques: photomontage, virtual-digital
model, photos of the maquette, drawing, perspective)

a text, English language, describing and explaining the concept of
the project: maximum length 1000 characters (including spaces).

one jpg file (dimension: 945×450 pixel, max 200 kb) that will include several drawings, among which at least one 3D detail view
of the project (admitted techniques: photomontage, virtual-digital
model, photos of the maquette, drawing, perspective)

a text, English language, describing and explaining the project’s
main details: maximum length 1000 characters (including spaces).

The deadline for the submission is July 15, 2008.

The Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia believes strongly in the younger generation, in its creative talents and the force of its ideas. Throughout the years this conviction has been translated into dedicated initiatives and projects.

On occasion of the 11th International Venice Biennale of Architecture (Venice, September 14 – November 23) this conviction is represented by EVERYVILLE, an exceptional opportunity for University Students from around the world to be directly involved in the organisation of the Biennale. The competition calls for the preparation of an idea-project based on the theoretical-critical text written by the curator of the 11th Exhibition Aaron Betsky. However, this time the element of challenge and stimulation lies in the fact that the works selected by the prestigious Jury will become an integral part of the 11th Exhibition, presented in a dedicated section. The competition thus represents a unique opportunity and unrepeatable occasion to present your work, coupled with the satisfaction of presenting it during what is now considered to be the most important architectural exhibition in the world.

THEME: Where, how do you live?

Program New Dwellings in a Changing Society

If the 20th Century was a period of change, when the impact of the Industrial Revolution became apparent in various sectors of the society, the 21st Century is already witnessing another transformation; it is difficult to enumerate the complexities of this new century, ranging from the movement of huge amounts of capital with the expansion of globalization and the intricacies of class differences, to lifestyle changes due to new technologies. However, most people still lead their lives in accordance with dwellings and lifestyles that were created from the 19th Century to the 20th Century, because they are familiar with these constructs. Dwellings that comprise physically solid and socially inflexible systems require people to live in conformity with them and still retain control. The division of rooms, which include the living room, the kitchen, and bedrooms, and which are used according to their functions, is almost a global phenomenon; the rooms fulfill exclusive functions respectively, and fail to offer flexibility by meeting new demands. Moreover, one also rarely finds cases reflecting various types of families and the changing environment.

Types of families have been rapidly changing in recent years, and are still changing. People, who have experienced a transition from extended families to nuclear families, are now witnessing the emergence of completely different, new types of families; and the concept of ?family? no longer maintains a solid adhesiveness as in the past, due to the growing prevalence of divorce, studying overseas, homosexual marriages, and frequent travel. The increase in the numbers of unmarried single households and the elderly population leads to an increasing trend of ‘living alone’, which raises doubts about the general functionality of dwellings. Furthermore, the extensive expansion in travel is blurring the concept of settlement as it existed in the agrarian society, and airports and hotels around the world change into the dwelling places of numerous travelers every night. As indicated by the emergence of iPods, which personalize space, and mobile phones, which transform the concept of distance, the advancement of electronic devices is changing personal relationships and rearranging the concepts of space and privacy. With people spending more time out of their houses, the dwelling in the sense of a place where families get together over a hot meal is no longer realistic. Moreover, the rise in land prices following rapid urbanization shows that dwellings can no longer be realized by merely occupying land. The interiors of offices, rooftops of buildings, dwellings on the water, and mobile homes are already being used as alternative dwellings, while other, even bolder possibilities, also exist.

We hope that students will read the signs of these changing patterns of the 21st Century society in their respective surroundings, cities, and countries, and propose new styles of dwellings reflecting the emergence of these new lifestyles. The dwelling may be for a single person or new types of families, and may even be collective dwellings. As modern architects in the early 20th Century reflected changing new lifestyles with proposals that transcended their era, rather than merely reflecting their times, we hope that applicants will create new alternatives for dwellings based on currently imaginable technological advancements and predictions of future social changes.

The competition is open to Undergraduate and graduate students up to Master’s Degree in Korea and other countries (students on leave of absence included). A team should be composed of three or less students.

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this competition is to create an online campaign design for Millennium Promise, a non-profit organization with the mission to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals – eight globally endorsed objectives that address the many aspects of extreme poverty – in Africa by 2015. Millennium Promise works with impoverished communities, national and local governments and partner organizations to implement high-impact programs aimed at transforming lives on the African continent and engaging donor nations, corporations and the general public in the effort.

DESIGN BRIEF

Design a campaign to advocate the Millennium Development Goals.

This competition calls for the design of a new media campaign that promotes public awareness of the Millennium Development Goals (“MDGs,” see Background Information below). The aim of the campaign is to prompt the general public to do what they can to support the cause and urge their leaders to stick to their commitment to the MDGs. The campaign needs to be web-based. It should be designed to reach as wide and global an audience as possible on the Internet, and as such anything of a “viral” nature is encouraged – but the campaign can only be represented using the Entry Provisions stated below and in our Entry Rules.

Your entry must include:

An overall message The campaign message should educate the general public about the main objective of the MDGs: to improve the lives of the world’s poorest. The overall message should be clear, compelling and empowering – ultimately, this is a call to action to inspire people to join the global fight to end poverty.
The MDGs Entrants can choose to select individual Millennium Development Goals or promote all eight in their campaign. (See Background Information below for the complete list.)
Campaign design Entries must show what the campaign would look like. Entries are limited to text, images and video/audio files only. Any proposed interactive elements (games, widgets, websites, social networking applications, etc.) must be represented using only these tools. Entries that direct users away from the DESIGN 21 website will be disqualified. See the Entry Rules for full details on file type, size and number constraints.
Target audience and distribution The entry should describe who their campaign is aimed at and how they see their campaign reaching that audience.

Millennium Promise logo
Entrants may incorporate the Millennium Promise logo in their design. If you do, we recommend that you download it from the Millennium Promise website at the following link and use the accompanying style guide here.

Entrants must not use the logos of any other organization or entity unless they have contacted the organization or entity in advance and obtained permission to do so.

MDG Icons
Originally developed by the MDGs Campaign in Brazil, the MDG icons are available for use in campaigns at national and global levels. If you would like to incorporate them in your design, we recommend that you download these icons from the two sites listed below and use them in your campaign. You may use them as they are or you may alter them – however, the competition is NOT premised on the design of the icons themselves but on the objective of an overall campaign design. Note: Should you use the MDG icons as is please include the following credit in the text of your entry description: © UNDP Brazil.

The Millennium Development Goals

At the Millennium Summit in September 2000, the largest gathering of world leaders in history adopted the UN Millennium Declaration, committing 189 world leaders to a new global partnership aimed at reducing extreme poverty and establishing a series of time-bound targets, with a deadline of 2015, that have become known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The MDGs are quantifiable targets that address extreme poverty in its many dimensions – income, poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter– while promoting gender equality, education and environmental sustainability. The MDGs reflect our most basic human rights – the rights of each person on the planet to health, education, shelter and security.

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are:

Goal 1: Eradicate Extreme Hunger and Poverty
Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education
Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality
Goal 5: Improve Maternal Health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability
Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Millennium Promise

Co-founded by Jeffrey Sachs, Millennium Promise is a non-profit organization working to end extreme poverty. Their mission is to achieve the MDGs in Africa by 2015, working with the belief that for the first time in history our generation has the opportunity to end extreme poverty, hunger and disease. Millennium Promise works with impoverished communities, national and local governments and partner organizations to implement high-impact programs aimed at transforming lives on the African continent and engaging donor nations, corporations and the general public in the effort.

Their flagship initiative, the Millennium Villages project, applies scientific research, economic analysis and international development expertise towards the practical achievement of the MDGs at the rural level. Now operating in 80 villages across 10 countries in Africa, the Millennium Villages project takes a comprehensive approach to ending poverty by holistically addressing agriculture, nutrition, water, health, education and infrastructure needs simultaneously.

2008: Act Now

The MDGs can be achieved if all actors work together and do their part. Poor countries have pledged to govern the ongoing interventions and invest in their people through health care and education. Rich countries have pledged to support them, through aid, debt relief and fair trade. But time is running out: 2007 marked the halfway point to the 2015 deadline, and now with seven years to go, there is still much to be done. The MDGs are achievable by 2015; what is needed is the will to hold governments to their promise.

A total of $10,000 in prize money will be divided among several prizes, depending upon the number of judges appointed by DESIGN 21. DESIGN 21 shall appoint judges to select finalists from the competition entries. Each judge will also have the opportunity to select a winner to be awarded a “DESIGN 21 Judge’s Prize.” There will also be an award for the “Most Popular Entry,” which will be selected by the DESIGN 21: Social Design Network members.
Five thousand ($5,000) will be divided equally among the entries awarded the DESIGN 21 Judges’ Prize and the Most Popular Entry. In the event, however, that one entry is awarded more than one of the above Prizes, that entrant will be entitled to the cumulative prize amounts of the awards it has won, as if each award was given to a separate entry (for example, if an entry were to be awarded two Judge’s Prizes and the Most Popular Entry, that entrant would be entitled to three (3) times the prize money as the winner of each of the remaining Judges’ Prizes.)

Millennium Promise will select one (1) entry that will be awarded the remaining $5,000 in prize money and be designated the “Overall Winner.” Again, in the event that the Overall Winner is also selected to be a DESIGN 21 Judges’ Prize recipient and/or named the Most Popular Entry, it will also receive the corresponding, cumulative prize money.

In addition, Millennium Promise may give special “Best of” mentions to a select number of entries, which will bear no cash prize. In the event that any of the designated judges are unable or unwilling to name an award winner for any reason, the DESIGN 21: Social Design Network team may, in its sole discretion, divide the prize money as if the judge had never been designated (i.e. the money would be apportioned equally among the remaining Judge’s Prize and Most Popular Entry awards); alternatively, DESIGN 21 may, in good faith and in its sole discretion, select an entry in place of that judge. If Millennium Promise is unable or unwilling to elect the Overall Winner, DESIGN 21 may elect an entry in its place, or, in its sole discretion, decline to award an Overall Winner, and divide the prize money among the awarded Judge’s Prizes and Most Popular Entry.
