San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge Lighting Competition
Register/Submit: Friday, June 06, 2008

An international search is underway seeking artistsÂ’ designs for the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge Lighting project. The intent of the project is to create a signature artwork on San Diego Bay that will be instantly recognizable, enliven the public environment and draw people to the area.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), which has jurisdiction over the 2.12-mile bridge, is partnering with the Port of San Diego on the development of an artist lighting design to illuminate the nearly 40-year old structure. Connecting Coronado and San Diego, it is already an icon for the region with its graceful blue curves. However, much of its allure is lost once the sun goes down.

The large-scale art project is open to all professional artist-led design teams. It is also geared to be a green project with energy-conserving elements and featuring sustainable materials.
