Gather Around : Hongdae Eoulmadang-ro Cultural Platform Design Idea Competition

In order to restore the innovative local culture and the equipment that help the coexistence of local residents, artists, and visitors as the typical cultural space of Seoul, ‘Front of Hongik University’, is going to transform into a standardized commercial space, the contest of inventing a cultural platform will be performed from 5th Oct. to 8th Nov.

The Eoulmadang-ro was the Danginri Line railroad that transported cargoes and people to the Danginri thermal power plant until 1970s. After the line was closed, it was transformed into the pedestrian-friendly street, public parking lots, and etc. Most cultural events of Front of Hongik University is being held near the Eoulmadang-ro, but there are insufficient facilities supporting the events. And intervening factors like public parking lots reduce the potential of creating of new cultures.

‘The culture of Front of Hongik University’ has been built its own originality via a number of the ateliers and experimental cultural space. However, the closure of cultural facilities and the breakaway of artists have recently become a social problem. The breakaway of artists due to the increased rental fee at ‘Front of Hongik University’, artists’ strong demands for using a public space, inconsistent regulations, the street environment that threats pedestrians, and the rapidly increasing number of foreign visitors. All of these are the current situation of Front of Hongik University.

The City of Seoul is planning a ‘Seoul style integrated public business model’ which adjust individual projects and businesses integratively through the cooperation between departments centered at the Eoulmadang-ro, Front of Hongik University. A cultural platform is meant as a cultural equipment or space that helps the recovery and the development of a local identity.

A contest participant is needed to select a space for a cultural platform near the Eoulmadang-ro that was the Danginri Line railroad by analyzing the current situation of the culture of Front of Hongik University and propose an idea about the way of construct the cultural platform for the restoration of the innovative local culture and operational contents.

The City of Seoul prepared the fundamental guideline for the idea proposal, and the analysis of the current state of the site will be given separately Suggestions : ▴Community and tourist platform for the restoration of reciprocal relationship between local residents and visitors ▴Art platform for the restoration of artistic and cultural identity ▴ Indie platform for persisting the cultural ecology ▴ Residential life platform for reinforcing a local community and connecting an outside.
