International Student Design Project
Call for Entries launched 15 May 2008
MIX08 is Indigo’s cultural exchange project for tertiary design students from Icograda Education Network, Icsid Education Network, IFI Education Network, Cumulus International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media and other institutions around the world. It invites students to collaborate with their peers, either within or outside of their schools, to formulate responses to the MIX08 brief in the form of a poster. The project encourages collaboration and discourse between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students around the world, or the participation of Indigenous people as advisors or mentors.
Context
The Kyoto Design Declaration was signed in Kyoto on the 28th of March 2008 by the Executive Board of Cumulus. The declaration states:
“A paradigm shift from technology driven development to human centered development is under way. The focus is shifting from materialistic and visible values to those, which are mental, intellectual and, possibly, less material. An era of ‘cultural productivity’ has commenced, where the importance attributed to modes of life, values and symbols may be greater than that attributed to physical products. Design thinking stands steadfastly at the centre of this continuum. Simultaneously, this development highlights the importance of cultural traditions and the need to extend and revitalize them.â€
The Kyoto Design Declaration 2008
The Kyoto Design Declaration suggests that it is important, globally, to maintain and continue local or traditional practices. We are interested in sustainability as a form of collaboration and a design ethic. It is not just a green issue but one that is about relationships.
The Brief for MIX08 asks students to engage with their local traditional communities to respond to the following statement:
Sustainability is old news.
Reference
MIX08 follows on from the success of MIX06, which was a pilot program for the Icograda Education Network. The pilot ran as a student exchange project between the University of Hartford University in the USA and Monash University in Australia. The pilot program explored the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous culture within the context of national identity. Mix06 website.
